Green River is hiring:

We are a team of ten: seven developers, two project managers, and a user experience designer. We are looking for a highly creative UI designer with front-end coding skills.

We believe that information technologies can play a pivotal role in solving pressing social problems. Current work includes software to promote green buildings, track and certify responsibly sourced coffee, and find ways to reduce the cost and improve the quality of education. Green River has been developing large-scale web applications since our incorporation in 2000. Our current clients include the National Education Association, the US Green Building Council, Starbucks, and others.

User Interface Designer

We’re looking for a team member who will:

  • Work directly with clients to design their software using storyboards and mocks
  • Sketch, prototype and implement user interfaces for tricky problems
  • Design and produce web pages, and graphics
  • Contribute to existing codebases and designs
  • Communicate effectively with clients and developers
  • Manage the implementation of visual and interaction design
  • Stay engaged with the latest technologies
  • Think about & share ideas for improving how we do things at Green River

Required Skills and Experience

  • Solid understanding of user interface design to maximize usability on desktop and mobile devices
  • Experience producing semantic and responsive design, HTML, JavaScript and CSS
  • Experience working with developers to ensure seamless integration of front- and back-end functionality
  • Experience designing for mobile
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Web and Mobile Application Developer

If you worked here over the last couple weeks, here’s a sample of what you might have been doing

  • Writing a javascript library to determine whether a given geographical coordinate lies within a specified country without making any requests to an external API
  • Extracting medical diagnosis coding data and algorithms from the depths of a legacy application
  • Deploying a new version of a Rails application to six servers using Capistrano and installing a new version of Apache Solr
  • Using git bisect to isolate the change which caused a regression in a production application.
  • Writing executable specs using Cucumber for a new project.
  • Working with a client to develop a financial simulation model for large urban school districts

Requirements

  • Fluency in Ruby or some other modern language often used for web programming.
  • Continually learning the latest web-based UI standards surrounding HTML, JavaScript, CSS and the ability to produce clean semantic HTML/CSS/JavaScript.
  • Fundamental understanding of relational database concepts.
  • Ability to work with version control systems such as Git and Subversion.
  • Knowledge of basic linux shell commands.

Skills you’ll want to pick up very quickly

  • Ability to work within large existing codebases and designs, making progressive enhancements gracefully without breaking what's already working.
  • Thinking about & sharing ideas for improving how we do things at GreenRiver.org
  • Ability to make deployments with Capistrano and Bundler
  • Bulldog wrangling
